Winter weather brings unique challenges to the trucking industry, and as roads become slick with ice and snow, preparedness and caution are crucial. To help drivers stay safe this season, we spoke with Darick Underwood, Director of Safety, and George Carter, Vice President of Safety, to share their insights and expertise on winter driving. Here are their top tips:

Top Three Winter Driving Precautions

According to Darick Underwood, drivers can set themselves up for success by focusing on three key precautions:

  1. Slow Down: Speed control is critical in adverse weather. Reducing speed allows drivers more time to react to slippery conditions and unexpected obstacles.
  2. Check the Forecast: Staying informed about weather conditions ahead of your route helps drivers anticipate challenges and plan accordingly.
  3. Ensure Equipment Readiness: Before heading out, make sure your truck is fully stocked and prepared for winter conditions. This includes checking tires, fuel, and emergency supplies.

Preparing Drivers for Winter Conditions Carter Express takes winter preparation seriously. Darick explains that the company provides specialized training programs focused on winter driving. These sessions cover:

  • Injury Prevention: Techniques to minimize risk when entering and exiting vehicles or handling freight in icy conditions.
  • Equipment Preparedness: Ensuring trucks are road-ready, with tips on inspecting tires, wipers, and fluids.
  • Accident Prevention: Strategies to handle icy roads, reduced visibility, and traffic congestion.

From November through January, Carter Express holds winter safety meetings and classes to reinforce these lessons. George Carter emphasizes the importance of these sessions, saying, “We take extra steps to prepare our drivers for the challenges they’ll face.” Overcoming Winter Challenges Both Darick and George highlight the most common issues drivers face during winter:

  • Weather-Related Delays: Accidents, icy roads, and  traffic congestion are frequent problems. To mitigate these, drivers are encouraged to leave early and maintain clear communication with dispatch and customers about potential delays.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Carter Express’s robust maintenance program ensures that trucks are equipped to handle winter conditions. With block heaters, winterized fuel, and daily inspections, our fleet is ready to roll no matter the weather.

Tools and Technology for Safety Carter Express leverages advanced technology to keep drivers informed and safe. As Darick shares, “We use satellite communication to notify drivers of approaching weather, dangerous conditions, or traffic delays. Additionally, sensors on our trucks alert drivers to freezing road conditions.” George adds that Carter Express has invested heavily in safety technologies, including:

  • In-Cab Cameras
  • Lane Departure Sensors
  • Hard Brake Detection
  • Stability Control
  • GPS Tracking

Teamwork and Communication In winter weather, teamwork is vital. “Communication between drivers and dispatchers becomes even more critical when delays or reroutes are necessary,” George notes. “Timely delivery is important to our customers, so sharing information about issues on the road is key.” Drivers are encouraged to report any concerns promptly to ensure smooth operations and safety.

What Sets Carter Express Apart Carter Express’s dedication to safety doesn’t stop at training and technology. “We’ve made significant investments in our fleet and our drivers,” George says. “From accident mitigation systems to our winter-specific training programs, we’re doing our part to keep the roadways safe for everyone.” At Carte Express, we understand that winter driving can be intimidating, but with the right preparation, communication, and support, drivers can navigate snow and ice with confidence. Stay safe this winter, and remember: at Carter Express, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
